Just felt like wrting some C&DP slash. It's effectively one-sided, since I don't let Deadpool appear for fears that his train of thought would take over. Maybe I should write a companion piece. Either way, it's kind of crappy. Basically Cable is thinking about his relationship with Wade in a semi-slashy way.

Nathan has a secret.

Well, let’s be honest, he has many.

But most of them are justified, at least by his own subjective morality. He thinks of the bigger picture, constantly. There has to be a future and he knows that if anyone could see what he could see, they would do as he did. He was not insane. He did what was best because he knew what was best. Those who disagreed were ignorant. That was okay. He could forgive ignorance. They couldn’t see what he could.

But still he had to keep his secrets safe from them or they could destroy everything, including themselves. ‘Them’ being almost the entire human and mutant population.

But recently he’s discovered a secret he can’t justify. It’s just wrong. There is no sense in it. He can only claim it is a primal, physical reaction that his mind should be able to extinguish. Instead it’s all he can do to realise and contain it.

He doesn’t remember when he noticed it. Perhaps the seeds were sown back when he first fought Wade, all those years ago, only to bloom when they were forced to fight again against the One World Church. Their combat was just so much fun. It shouldn’t have been, shouldn’t be, but it was. It is. Nathan tries to elevate himself above that sort of thing these days. That he just can’t dedicate himself to the Boy Scout image whenever Wade is around might mean that the mercenary is necessary for keeping him grounded.

If that was all of it though, there would be no cause for concern. He would strive for the heady heights of Godhood while Wade pinned him to the ground with fists and bullets. That would be…

He struggles to think of a word other than ‘kinky’.

That’s the problem, right there. Wade is too good at dragging him down. Nathan finds himself being referred to as ‘reckless’ when Deadpool is around, and not only by association. He acts wilder, he knows it. They’re like two children who should be separated because Nathan’s behaviour slips when Wade is around. He’s trying to compensate for that, but it’s easier said than done.

There’s just something so…free about Deadpool. The mercenary would deny it, would claim to be trapped in the life he has. But he can’t see what Nathan sees. Nobody can. But then, he’s been over that particular angst already.

The jokes, the regeneration, even the insanity. As much as Nathan tries to fix Wade, he can’t help but wonder if he would be happy with a successful result. Would Deadpool still be himself?

Cable can make sure he retains his own character and doesn’t let Wade corrupt him. It shouldn’t even be a contest of wills really. Wade didn’t even realise what he did to Nathan’s self-control and half of the time he took orders like a good little mercenary. Admittedly he took them to the most extreme conclusion, but there was still a sense that Nathan was in charge. Except when he wasn’t. Wade decided when he worked for Cable and when he worked for Cable’s enemies. He wasn’t beholden to anyone or anything, not like Nathan, who knows his destiny and duty. His lonely destiny. His burdensome duty.

No, Wade is a law unto himself. Unpredictable, untameable, practically unstoppable. He is chaos personified, a constant that could never truly be stopped by Order.

And Nathan…

…He’s in love with him. He loves everything from that gravelly Demi Moore voice to the way Wade moves when he kills. There is a fine line between admiring a combatant’s technique and considering their executions beautiful.

That is why he tells no-one. They would be concerned about the desecration of his moral high ground. They would worry that Deadpool possessed a certain influence that endangered them all.

And if Nathan had told them all this he would have to tell them everything. And the rest would be simply put, that they were right to be concerned.

After all, he worried about himself.

Every time the sound of a katana sent pleasurable shivers down his spine.

Beautiful characterisation, nice to hear Nathan's thoughts for a change.
Makes up for Marvel's crap.

Disclamers on a lot of fics nowadays are "I do far less damage to the characters than the writers do themselves". Because it's true.

;D I liked it, especially the comparing them to children that need to be separated. True statement.

Thank you :D The simile came naturally as I work with small children.

...THIS IS NOW MY (SEXY) REASON FOR WHY NATE IS AVOIDING WADE IN CANON.

ALSO, MORE.

That is totally it. Nate's scared of losing himself in Wade.

I'll contemplate more, though if I start writing and it's crap, I won't post it.

I really enjoyed reading this, the characterization won. :) Though I do admit a little editing wouldn't hurt.

What do you mean 'editing'?

What did I mean editing? I'm not entirely sure myself due to the late hour of submitting that comment. Oh, jeez, I hope my first comment didn't sound condescending.

At the time I was think I might have been mentally nitpicking at the way 'Deadpool' and 'Wade' was used interchangeably by Cable. Using 'Wade' seems so much more personal than using 'Deadpool'. Once Cable started using 'Wade' in his train of thought wouldn't he continue to use 'Wade'? Yeah, I know, it's horribly persnickety.

But I really did enjoy reading this and I'm not really sure why I left that bit about editing. Hmm, maybe you should just ignore everything written above and just know that I really liked it, because at this point I'm not sure I mean to say much less what I meant to say in the first comment.

It's a reasonable point, but I tend to try and avoid overusing a character's name, interchanging it with their other names or descriptions.

Ah, its very good to read something from Cable's perspective regarding the relationship. That man is...hard to get a feel of how he thinks. Thank you for writing this.

While I like the line about Nate and Wade as children (and I think its very true), I can't help but think that is slightly out of character for Cable to think of himself as a child... I think he must be one of those people who were born acting like they're already middle-aged.

Please write the Wade companion piece.

Generally yeah, but he's recognising here that Wade's immaturity has an influence on him. Thanks for the comment!

Beautifully written, and a great look into Cable. Definitely preferable to what Marvel's gone and done with them now that they've seen each other again XP Totally mem'ing ♥

Yesssss I like. I enjoy Cable's POV in fics - not that Wade's isn't highly amusing, but Cable should get his own voice every once in a while - and you do it well :)

Lovely characterization, my new canon on Cable, preferable to the MW crap. And that last sentence--- oh, yummy.

That Demi Moore voice

First thing Nate mentions when he recovers from the lobotomy, and the first thing War!Cable says to Wade.

It's just so very, very, very, gay. I mean, Demi Moore is really sexy, and like, a lot of men's fantasy, so Nate pointing out that Wade sounds like that? CANON!
